Registered HGFA flying schools or training facilities are the way to learn to fly foot launched and microlight aircraft. All schools are required to conform to the HGFA (and CASA) minimum standards for equipment, operational systems, certification and ongoing support. There is generally a school near most major metro centres, and there are also many in the better flying areas such as on the NSW coast, inland QLD and so on.

The role of the school is to make sure the beginner pilot can fly safely on their own, and be able to extend their experience in a progressive manner. As a result, many are linked to clubs, to make sure the newly qualified pilot doesn't become isolated once they have their pilot certificate. Most schools also sell equipment, offer service facilities and can run sessions to take you to the next level of proficiency or specialist expertise (such as powered flying). Many also run organised tours or specialist clinics (towing, cross-country flying, manoeuvres) both here and overseas through out the year.

In most cases, schools can also offer tandem experience flights to non-pilots, and also organise accommodation if the pupil wishes to study over a week's course.
